Ava DuVernay is a director who has broken many boundaries in Hollywood over her career. She was the first black woman to win the Sundance Film Festival directing award in the U.S. dramatic competition, her film Selma saw her become the first black woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Director, and also the first black female director to have her film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Then in 2017, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for her film 13th. Oh and one other feather in her cap, she is the first black American woman to direct a film that earned at least $100 million domestically.
