Having grown up in a life of poverty in Detroit, Michigan, John Stewart was inspired to make the world a better place and joined the U.S. Marine Corps after school, in which he became an expert marksmen and rose to the rank of Sergeant. Unaware that the Guardians of the Universe had their eyes on him, John Stewart earned his Green Lantern Ring when he sprang into action to fight the Manhunter without hesitation, thus joining the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
